RMAI loved seeing so many of you in Las Vegas last week. We set record numbers for recent years with almost 1,600 attendees at our 2025 Annual Conference! We valued the support of 45 sponsors, enhancing our ability to provide the highest level of education and networking to our attendees. We held 25 education sessions and 21 networking events, including our Speedway Social Wednesday night. We had a filled Exhibit Hall with additional booths outside in the Atrium, for a total of 99 booths presenting services and products for the industry.
RMAI held our Annual Business Meeting Tuesday afternoon, where we presented our annual awards, recognizing leaders in the receivables management industry. The RMAI Board of Directors awarded the Bud Reitzel Lifetime Commitment Award, the industry’s highest recognition, to Jim Mastriani, President of Velocity Portfolio Group, Inc.; the President’s Award to Kelly Knepper-Stephens, Chief Legal Officer of TrueAccord; and the Integrity Award to Mike Colby, long-time supporter and former board member for RMAI.
We look forward to seeing you August 5-7, 2025, at our 2025 Executive Summit at the Woodstock Inn & Resort in Woodstock, VT. Mark your calendar for next year’s 2026 Annual Conference at the Aria in Las Vegas, February 9-12, 2026.
Read on for Federal, Legislative Fund, Certification and Membership updates. State, Court Case and Education updates will return next month.

In recent weeks, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has undergone significant leadership transitions. Following the termination of Director Rohit Chopra, President Trump appointed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as acting director, later replacing him with Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Russ Vought. Most recently, President Trump nominated Jonathan McKernan as the permanent director, pending Senate confirmation.
Additionally, the CFPB has experienced operational disruptions. Representatives from the Department of Government Oversight (DOGE) visited the agency earlier this month, and multiple communications to CFPB personnel have included directives to pause work-related activities. Acting Director Vought also submitted a budget request of $0 for the CFPB for Q3 2025, citing the agency’s $711 million in reserves in a message to Federal Reserve Chairman Howell.
Reports indicate that several CFPB employees have been terminated, including over 70 probationary staff members.
Beyond the CFPB, President Trump has made additional financial regulatory nominations, including Jonathan Gould as Comptroller of the Currency and Brian Quintenz to lead the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which is expected to play a key role in cryptocurrency oversight.
On February 18, President Trump signed an Executive Order to expand his oversight of several independent agencies, including the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Federal Communications Commission, Federal Trade Commission, Securities and Exchange Commission, Office of Financial Research, and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. The order mandates agency heads to regularly consult with the White House and submit strategic plans for review. Additionally, it prohibits agencies from issuing regulations, guidance, or legal positions that conflict with the position of the President or Attorney General.
Meanwhile, Congress faces a pressing legislative agenda as it seeks to prevent a government shutdown next month. Any efforts to modify or eliminate the CFPB must be undertaken by Congress.
